About Ashtanga

What is Ashtanga Yoga?
Ashtanga is a Sanskrit combination of 2 words: Ashtau = eight and
Anga = limbs, therefore Ashtanga means eight limbs. It is a detailed system through which one attains Self-realization and enlightenment. This particular system for living and achieving yoga(union of the self with the Higher Self) was first documented in the Yoga Sutras by the ancient sage Patanjali more than 2000 years ago. However, the practice of yoga dates back 5000+ years.

The eight limbs are:

1. Yama – Guidance for interpersonal actions
Ahimsa - non-violence towards self or others
Satya - truthfulness
Asteya – not stealing
Bramacharya – self-discipline/moderation in actions
Aparigraha – not coveting
2. Niyama – Guidance for personal actions
Saucha - purity/cleanliness mentally and physically
Santosa - contentment in rain or shine
Tapas - spiritual purification
Svadhaya - study of self through scriptures
Ishvara Pranidhana - surrender or devotion to God
3. Asana - physical poses
4. Pranayama - breathing techniques
5. Pratyahara – withdrawal of the senses
6. Dharana - steady concentration
7. Dhyana - meditation
8. Samadhi – state of bliss, absorption into Oneness

What is Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and Mysore Practice?
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is the system of physical practice as defined by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore , India . It is a set sequence of postures that is uniquely performed by utilizing deep, rhythmic breathing, known as ujjayi, to initiate and coordinate the movements. This particular combination is called vinyasa which loosely translates as flow. In addition, Ashtanga Vinyasa employs drishti which could be thought of as the point of focus. The use of drishti helps us to moderate outward distractions by specific gazing. Practice, then, becomes more about the internal experience rather than physical gymnastics.

Internal heat is generated that often results in profuse sweating. This is good! The sweat naturally cleanses us while strengthening the nervous system, making us fit to experience the more subtle limbs of Ashtanga Yoga.

There are 6 series in all. Students begin with Primary Series. Some will move into Intermediate Series after much refinement of Primary Series. Few progress to the four very advanced Advanced Series.

The memorization of the sequence invokes the individuals’ inner wisdom revealing the practice as the ultimate guru or teacher. Once memorized, students begin Mysore or Self-Practice. The teacher is present to provide assistance and adjustments in the poses.

Ashtanga as asana and a spiritual path can only be truly experienced through regular practice; otherwise it amounts to just another pile of theory. The limbs of Ashtanga, like that of a tree, do not sprout up linearly or in a controlled fashion. They emerge from our dedication, persistence, and patience. Our roots begin to grow deeper, firmly rooting us to the core of our being and our connection to all life. This is Yoga!
